Dance Performance by Tümay Kılınçel
"we ♥ 2 raqs" is a choreographic performance that analyses so-called belly dance or Oriental dance and goes beyond its technique.
The dance technique of Raqs is used to negotiate and deconstruct orientalist and colonial image structures.
Based on Raqs, the so-called belly dance or oriental dance, "we ♥ 2 raqs" negotiates and deconstructs orientalist and colonial image structures. The dancers Dina Abdelhafez, The Darvish, Lia Pavlidis, Suzan Demircan (Zadiel Leyla Sasmaz) and Marilyn Nova White create a collective Raqs body through their interpretation of very different genres - Oriental dance, tribal fusion, American tribal style, fusion, voguing, baladi and contemporary dance - in the choreographic performance. Kanun player Dima Dawood, percussionist Sultan Kara and singer Leila Moon play the music. Following the solo work "Dansöz", dancer and choreographer Tümay Kılınçel and dramaturge Berna Kurt continue their collaboration on Raqs and recontextualise dance as a feminist, self-empowering practice.
