MUTATING KINSHIP LAB
by Ming Poon & Ariel William Orah
Mutating Kinship is a collective response to the precarious living and working conditions of the Asian diaspora. It is a resistance to the idea of political and cultural integration and assimilation and advocates for an equality of co-existence. Artist-led initiatives with Asian diaspora backgrounds have grown sporadically in numbers during the pandemic. Most of the time, they work in isolation. MKL brought some of the current Asian performing artist initiatives together to build a network of support and shared resources and knowledge. Through this lab, MKL attempt to work out a kinship system that dignifies the diasporic and mutating identities, as well as supports Asian artists during crises.
